Schumann made his first sketches of Frauenliebe und Leben (The Love and Life of a Woman) in July 1840. The text is borrowed from the song cycle of nine poems written ten years earlier by Adelbert von Chamisso. Schumann will retain only the first eight poems to conclude the piano on a reminder of the first song. The cycle will be published for the first time in Leipzig in 1843 at the publisher Friedrich Whistling. The work was greatly appreciated during the composer's lifetime and is still very popular today. This edition has been produced from the various original sources that have come down to us.
