Quattro Canzoni (Vier Canzonen) D 688 by Franz Schubert. High Voice and Piano. Italian. Intermediate-Advanced. MCL1046
These four songs written in January 1820 in the style of '' bel canto '' testify to Schubert's interest in Italian music beyond the influence of his teacher Antonio Salieri. Published for the first time in 1871, they were also dedicated to Franziska von Roner Ehrenwerth (Fräulein von Roner), a young singer who will later become the wife of Josef von Spaun, one of the composer's oldest friends. The range of these four songs is never excessive, but they require significant breath control. Contrary to what has been thought for many years, the first two songs are not written on texts of Metastasio, but on poems by Jacopo Vittorelli, published in 1818 in his collection Poesie. The text of the first song, entitled '' Not t'accostar all'urna '', will be included by Giuseppe Verdi for the first of his Six Romances of 1838. The last song, '' Mio ben ricordati '' - of which elegance and melancholy recall Bellini's composizioni da camera - is without a doubt the most successful of this cycle. Although less well-known than most of the composer's lieder, the Four D 688 Songs remain no less faithful to Schubert's exceptional talent. This publication has been carefully prepared from the edition Breitkopf & Härtel 1894-95.
