Mozart composed songs for most of his short life. In 1768, he was 12 when he wrote '' An die Freude '' his first song; a tribute in thanks to the doctor who will cure him of smallpox. In 1791, the year of his death, he will complete '' Das Kinderspiel ''. Apart from some notable exceptions, such as '' Abendempfindung '', '' An Chloe '' or the ariette '' Oiseaux si tous les ans '', Mozart's songs is almost always in strophic form. It is highly probable, in view of the success of his great operatic arias, that Mozart himself did not attach much importance to his songs. Nevertheless, these thirty miniatures present to us a more intimate facet of his work and many of these small masterpieces are today given in recital. This publication was produced from the first edition published by Breitkopf in 1799 and is the first modern and complete edition of Mozart's Lieder adapted to new reading media.
